The Château de Cheverny: A Family Enterprise

The Château de Cheverny: A Family Enterprise

Added on 03.02.2015

The Château de Cheverny is home to the Marquise and Marquis de Vibraye, whose family has lived there for over six centuries. Pride of ownership is palpable, which explains why it is so beautifully furnished and kept up, yet so wonderfully cosy and inviting.

The château served as a model for Moulinsart, Captain Haddock's château in The Adventures of Tintin. A permanent, interactive exhibition retraces the story of Tintin, the famous comic book series and film. Don't miss the marvellous chequerboard kitchen garden next to the château's famous kennel, with its pack of one hundred hounds for the winter hunts, or the charming Garden of the Apprentices. You can also visit the woodland area of the park in an electric car. It will take you in near silence through ancient cedar, pine, fir and sequoia groves, before you board a boat - also electrically-powered - for a tour on the canal.Cheverny is open every day of the year and has been since 1922 when it became one of the first private châteaux to open its doors to the public. It has only closed down for a few hours on 3 occasions: when the Queen Mother came for a visit in 1963, when the former Marquis de Vibraye died in 1976, and when the current owner was married in 1994.
